講演概要:
The field of multimedia is curious in that many researchers treat the field as their second area of interest. This view makes sense because the field itself concerns research on applications that interact with many other research areas including signal processing (e.g., coding), computer networking (e.g., bounded latency delivery without guarantees), systems (e.g., real-time scheduling, efficient data handling, etc.), user-interfaces (e.g., real-time interaction, computer-supported cooperative work), graphics (e.g., large displays and virtual reality), database systems (e.g., time-sequenced data and very large objects) among others. Multimedia applications are well-known (e.g., video-on-demand, distributed collaboration, multimedia authoring, interactive TV, lecture webcasting, etc.). But, what is unique about the field of multimedia as a scientific discipline? What accomplishments, if any, have researchers in the field contributed? And lastly, does multimedia have a place in university education? This talk will attempt to answer these questions by presenting my view of the past, present, and future of multimedia systems and applications. Specifically, fundamental principles from the field will be summarized, an update will be given on the research agenda established at the 2003 ACM SIGMM Retreat, and suggestions for future research on multimedia will be outlined.
